The fictional Father Ángel de la Cruz is based on Legion of Christ
founder Marcial Maciel, whose long history of child abuse was not
addressed until 2006 and only publicly acknowledged in 2009.
But director Luis Urquiza chooses to structure his film through the
largely uncomprehending, wondering eyes of 13-year-old Julián, who
travels from the arms of his loving pastoral family into the austere,
hallowed halls of the seminary. Singling out the boy as his intimate
disciple, installing him in his palatial private quarters and redubbing
him “Sacramento Santos,” Father Ángel begins Julian’s instruction
into the mysteries of “perfect obedience,” whose cardinal rule is:
Never question a superior’s actions.
A rugged city editor (Clark Gable) poses as a journalism student and flirts with the professor (Doris Day).
Haim-Aaron is a bright, ultra-orthodox religious scholar living in Jerusalem. His talents and devotion are envied by all. Poor but happy, young Nello and his grandfather live alone, delivering milk as a livelihood, in the outskirts of Antwerp, a city in Flanders (the Flemish or Dutch-speaking part of modern-day Belgium). They discover a beaten dog (a Bouvier, a large sturdy dog native to Flanders) and adopt it and nurse it back to health, naming it Patrasche, the middle name of Nello’s mother Mary, who died when Nello was very young. Nello’s mother was a talented artist, and like his mother, he delights in drawing, and his friend Aloise is his model and greatest fan and supporter.
The non-fiction author Walter falls for the physics student Agnes. He is fascinated by her extreme attitude towards life and her reserved appearance, which is quite the opposite of his quiet and regular life. When Agnes encourages him to follow his passion for writing fiction, he starts to work on a book, a portrait of how he sees her.

Besides money, the contract includes sexual favors that Mrs. Herbert will offer to the draughtsman in the absence of Mr. Herbert. Entirely confident in his ability to weave a web of intrigues, Mr. Neville eventually becomes a victim of someone else’s elaborate scheme. The film is structured as a sophisticated intellectual puzzle like the ones popular in the 17th century.
