A married Japanese forester during WWII is sent to Indochina to manage forests. He meets a young Japanese typist and promises to leave his wife. He doesn’t and after the war, she turns up and the affair resumes.

The film then shows his marital breakdown, the premiere of his opera Benvenuto Cellini, his travels throughout Europe, his second marriage to Marie Recio (called “Marie Martin” in the film), public acceptance in old age and reconciliation with his son.

The letter finds its way to the opposition party, which decide to use the letter by blackmailing the powerful local “camarilla”, and to get his own man to represent the county. What follows is not easy to guess….
