We shared a small apartment in Hamburg for 10 years. Just finished school and moved out with our parents, we were able to let off steam together in the big city and enjoy the freedom of student life. We laughed, cried, partied and toiled together – but above all we got to know each other intensively. In these 10 years we have not only grown up, but have also become best friends. Before we part ways and we will soon be living on different continents, we decide to go on a great journey together. Just the two of us. A journey in which we have time and leisure to think and reflect. In which we can only concentrate on ourselves.
The Eagles performed live for the first time in April 1994 after a fourteen-year-long hiatus. Their reunion album’s name was in reference to Don Henley’s quote after the band’s breakup in 1980, when he commented that they would only play together again “when Hell freezes over”. Recorded at the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California for an MTV special, the live sessions produced eleven tracks for the album, including a new acoustic version of “Hotel California”.
THE LOTTERY OF BIRTH is the first in a three-part documentary series entitled ‘Creating Freedom’ exploring the relationship between freedom, power and control in Western democracies. The series draws together interviews with some of the world’s leading intellectuals, journalists and activists to offer an alternative perspective on today’s society and the future we’re creating. We do not choose to exist, or the environment we grow up in. Our starting point in life is one of passive reliance on forces over which we have no control. THE LOTTERY OF BIRTH shows that from birth onwards our minds are a battleground of competing forces: familial, educational, cultural, and professional. The outcome of this battle not only determines who we become, but the society that we create.
